Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th in 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was a sole child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while learning about secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school was cut short after she dropped out of school. A poet by trade She began to sing at live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form an ensemble. You Got Me was co-written by both. During Roots' performance she came out to be an artist. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway the musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
